About Antigua

Antigua and Barbuda is the jewel of the West Indies. Antigua is the main island of many and the only island where real estate is available for purchase. Antigua and Barbuda gained its independence in 1981.

Indigenous populations such as the Amerindians aka Siboneys settled around 3100BC. Arawaks followed which were followed by the Caribs. Christopher Columbus sailed by in 1493 but was not settled by the Spanish. Instead the English colonized Antigua in 1632 setting up sugar plantations.

Today, Antigua and Barbuda thrives on a healthy tourism industry which includes sailing, fishing and the most beautful 365 beaches; one for every day of the year.

The population of Antigua and Barbuda is approximately 85,000 and boasts one of the highest annual incomes in the West Indies. The main currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, but the US$ is widely exchanged. The land area is approx 170 sq miles, or 440km2.

Antigua’s capital city is St. John’s with a population of 25,000. The government provides the local TV station ABS-TV and the private media outlet is the Daily Observer which has a daily newspaper, website and radio stations.
